Ever wonder where the phrase “think outside the box” came from? It’s said that management consultants coined the term in the 1970s when having clients play the “nine dots” puzzle.

The game, played by connecting a grid of nine dots—with just four interconnected straight lines—challenges the player to use creative methods to solve the problem. It’s also the inspiration for Denver-based NINE dot ARTS, an art consulting firm that outfitted Union Station with nearly 600 pieces of art.
