Baggage, text by Samuil Marshak and illustrations by Vladimir Lebedev is part of a 1920s movement among Russian writers and artists to create a new type of children’s literature. Avant-garde creatives utilized aesthetic innovations and social and political philosophies of the 20s to capture and inspire young people. Samuil Marshak and Vladimir Lebedev collaborated on a number of projects together — many are available to view in the collection of The Museum of Modern Art in New York. This edition of Baggage is available for sale through the MoMA Design Shop with English translations and an afterword by Sarah Suzuki, Associate Curator in the Department of Prints and Illustrated Books at MoMA.
