Get ready with some memorable modernism moments from Dana Cain!
Our First Opening Night, 2006.
We didn’t know what to expect when we launched the show at the Art District’s tiny Capsule Event Center in 2006. Opening Night we had a line around the block and it was so crowded folks were carrying chairs out over their heads, jammed like sardines. We had about 1500 people at that show, in 4,000 sq feet. and it proved that Denver was, indeed, ready for a Modernism Show. That show was about the size of our Tiki Lounge now.
Discovering Charles Phoenix, 2007.
The minute I heard about this guy, and his kooky retro slide shows, I knew I wanted him for the Denver Modernism Show. He debuted at our second show, in 2007, and has been a beloved fixture ever since. Every year, I can’t wait to see Charles again. He is one of my favorite human beings on the planet.
The Velvet Elvis performance, 2008.
It was our first year at the National Western, and we suddenly had all this space! We were able to start adding stages and live music. And The Velvet Elvis, complete with gogo girls, was just amazingly fun on our opening night!
Miss Modernism Pageant Launch, 2010.
This is what happens with Charles Phoenix and I are brainstorming on the phone. Beauty pageants are so camp and retro, and this one really isn’t about “traditional beauty,” it’s about finding someone with amazing retro style and a great personality who can go represent us in Palm Springs and around town. Part of her prize is a paid trip to the Palm Springs Modernism Show! The night this event launched, we could see that it was a huge hit, and added a whole new dimension to our show.
Honey Touche and the Touchettes performance, 2011.
During our VIP party, they danced onto the stage, all dressed as retro stewardesses, and proceeded to wow us all with their choreographed routine – like if the Rockettes were all gogo dancers.
The 2009 Guest List!
We had SHAG, Richard Cheese, Charles Phoenix and Design Star Matt Locke – all in one year! It was incredible!
