Movemasters Profile

Well established Denver company on their less is more business model.

Movemasters, located next to Buntport Theater, is a well-established Denver business who has been championing what could be considered a modern business model for 29 years. In the first fifteen minutes of meeting Randall Hirzel, owner of Movemasters, it is easy to tell he cares. Plain and simple. The way he talks about every aspect of his business, you understand why his moving company has been so successful.

Hirzel started his business in Washington DC. Tired of his administrative job, he one day bought a truck with the intention of refinishing furniture. Hirzel says it took him about fifteen minutes of sanding a chair to realize he actually didn’t want to refinish furniture. Since he had already bought the truck, he instead began marketing himself as a mover. Hirzel was met with instant success and began moving the belongings of high profile people in DC, among them, Henry Kissinger. Hirzel decided if he was going to continue pursuing his own business, he wanted to do it in a place he really wanted to live. Hirzel then moved to Colorado.

Movemasters has a niche of trust in high-end residences and buildings, but they welcome moves of any size.  Hirzel says it's a company philosophy to treat small one bedroom apartments with the same priority as large residences.  While the majority of Movemasters' focus is on packing, moving, and storage services, they also maintain a specific manager to work with local design showrooms and about 100 interior designers to provide everything from single item deliveries to large-scale residential installs in Denver and areas like Vail and Aspen.  Additionally Movemasters are experts in moving art, having worked with both the Denver Art Museum and Aspen Art Museum."

One of the things Hirzel is most proud of is that in 29 years of being registered with the Better Business Bureau, Move Masters has not received one bad complaint. Hirzel says for a moving company, that is a fair accomplishment. Move Masters receives most of their business through referrals and word-of-mouth. Westword has also given the company their “Best of Denver” reward several times.

The business, Hirzel says, has been kept intentionally small in order to focus on quality. He says most moving companies maintain anywhere from 12-25 trucks, whereas Move Masters has 5 trucks available for use. Keeping with quality, his crew is very well trained. Each move is evaluated before it gets executed and Hirzel says that while every item is treated with care, it is important to identify specific pieces that may have a special historical or collection aspect. It is not uncommon for Movemasters to handle museum quality furniture and artworks.  Their local storage facility is climate controlled to handle these kinds of items.

One of the things Move Masters does to consider the environment is encourage clients to use recycled boxes for packing. Beyond just a suggestion, they offer to drop them off before the move and then pick them up after the move as well. Hirzel says this is one area that can really make a difference and that the responsibility to lessen impact is shared between business owner and client. Also, most of Move Master’s employees bike to work and they try to keep trucks filled with a low-sulfur diesel fuel.
