The Myto and The Miura: Two of a kind!

Two chairs built with innovative design and materials

The Myto chair and Miura barstool have many things in common. Both of them were created using innovative plastic technology & collaboration, both recently were inducted into the permanent collection at the New York Modern Museum of Art and both are available through local furniture showroom, Source Four.

What began as a marketing initiative by German chemical & plastics company, BACF, to demonstrate the capabilities of their fast and easy flowing Ultradur plastic quickly turned into a fusion of modern design innovation. Konstantin Grcic, currently Germany’s most successful working industrial designer, was approached by BASF and asked to develop a product entirely out of the versatile engineering plastic. From there, Grcic turned to reputable Italian furniture company, Plank, to partner in selling and marketing the product. In just one year’s time, the idea went from concept to completion. The Myto chair was introduced at the world’s largest plastics fair, K 2007, in Germany and first came to the United States market through the 2008 ICFF.

What makes the Myto chair and the Miura barstool so unique are their shapes combined with its material properties. In the case of the Myto, the sled base shape is supported by the strength of the plastic and the details of the design. Both the Myto and the Miura are made using a single mold, called a monobloc. Ultradur plastic has the ability to pour quickly into the mold and create smooth thick to thin cross sections, creating elegance in the finished product. Both products are also 100% recyclable, which is a departure from the typical material used to produce other plastic furniture pieces. The Myto and Miura are stackable and suitable for professional or casual environments as well as both indoor and outdoor use.

Since finishing the Myto and Miura, Grcic has gone on to produce his next chair, the Monza. The product was recently released in Europe and will be making its way to the United States shortly. For more information or to see either the Myto or the Miura in person, visit Source Four.
