Popularized as part of the Case Study House Program (1945-1966) in Southern California, award-winning Architectural Pottery pieces are iconic of mid-century modern design. The planters and containers, designed to ‘safeguard the health of the plant’ and also compliment the simplistic grace of mid-century modern architecture, capture the timeless appeal of indoor-outdoor home design.
The Case Study House Program was created by the editor of Arts & Architecture magazine, John Etenza, in order to address the housing dilemma in post-war Southern California. Etenza corralled eight of the era’s most talented and influential architects to participate, including Eero Saarinen, Richard Neutra, Charles Eames, Craig Ellwood, Pierre Koenig, J.R. Davidson, Whitney Smith, Thorton Abell. The goal of the program was to create eight modular home designs that could be replicated, would be inexpensive to build and demonstrate sound design principles or designs that people would enjoy living in.
The designs of Architectural Pottery have been re-released through a company called, Vessel. Vessel is the sole licensor of Architectural Pottery and all pieces are made from original drawings and molds, as well as manufactured in California.
